Womikinimirri Puruntatameri

- 2012 Tiwi map 2012
  • ochre on linen
100 cm x 160 cm
Description

In this work, Puruntatameri draws on his traditional totem of the kirilima, the jungle fowl as inspiration. His painting depicts the country in which the orange-footed scrub fowl once dwelled. Womikinimirri's paintings can be read as detailed Tiwi maps, each intricate brushstroke reflecting his country as viewed from above. Womikinimirri Puruntatameri was the most senior person in the Pirlangimpi Community on Melville Island, and he enjoyed his status in the community as the most senior authority on all things Tiwi.
