In this diptych, in which the shadowed form of a wooded mountain landscape seems almost to seep through from the darkness, Van Hek has overlaid a dense layer of graphite pencil. Drawn over repetitively until accumulated as a thick surface across the paper, the graphite creates a skin which ripples and catches light like a burnished metal surface or animal hide.
