Description

Louis Buvelot was a Swiss artist who had trained in Paris and migrated to Australia in 1865. Arriving in Melbourne, he established and ran a photographic studio for a year, but quickly returned to his first love, painting. Buvelot is considered a forerunner of Australian impressionism, painting landscapes that combined both highly detailed depictions of places and animals, yet achieved a lively, lyrical approach to colour, light and atmosphere.
