William Dobell was a renowned Australian portrait and landscape artist of the 20th century. Dobell won the Archibald Prize, Australia's premier award for portrait artists on three separate occasions.

Dobell painted a number of versions of this study of a young man. Dramatically lit and painted with thick, waxy paint built up to create a richly dense surface, the figure almost hovers as a luminscent presence radiating out from the darkness of his surroundings.
