Description

Hunt applies his keen observance of the everyday to mine moments of unexpected, meaning, revelation, or affirmation. He often conveys the profound in the fleeting, and his visual use of text ranges from the descriptively assertive, to the subtle. His videos are momentary and transmuting, as though capturing the fragilities and soulful transience of that which is ephemeral.

Since early recognition as a graduate chosen for the 1995 Hatched exhibition – an annual project at Perth Institute of Contemporary Art that selects and celebrates high level art school graduates from across Australia – Matthew Hunt has held over twenty solo exhibitions and been included in over fifty significant group exhibitions across the globe from New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, China, USA, Austria, Switzerland, to Germany and the UK.

Hunt was born in Fremantle, Australia in 1967 and studied a Degree with Fine Art Honours at Curtin University following a Diploma in Graphic Design at Perth Central Tafe. He has been awarded numerous awards and residencies that include a studio residency at the Christoph Merian Foundation in Basel, Switzerland, the International Studio and Curatorial Program, Brooklyn, New York and the Associate Artist Residency at ACME, London.

Hunt’s work is held in major public and private collections across Australia, Switzerland and the UK.
